Textile addict: Five of the most gorgeous velvet, wool and jersey garments for autumn

Of course, style means a lot to us here at Maude & Tommy – but we’ve got a confession to make.

Don’t judge.

OK. Here goes: we spend a lot of our day – probably way too much of our day – stroking the glorious textiles that our clothes are made of.

And autumn’s the very best season for it. Every day, we’re opening boxes of gorgeous new arrivals and it’s like an Aladdin’s cave of velvet, wool, bamboo and chenille.

We know lots of our customers share our secret fabric fetish too – so if you’re a textile addict, discover our five favourites for autumn/winter. Shop instore or online.

1. Blueberry burst

This easy-to-wear chenille dress from Out of Xile is just the most beautiful combination of fabrics. With a bodice and skirt in textured chenille, this British brand (everything is designed and made in the UK) amps up the comfort with a back and sleeves in the softest jersey. As a finishing flourish, there’s a band of indigo velvet around the skirt hem.

As if that wasn’t enough – it comes in a vibrant burgundy colourway too.

2. Paisley perfection

Nila Rubia is the queen of Indian textiles – the main focus of her business is to support a small cottage textile industry in Rajasthan with which her family has been involved for generations.

This cosy 100% wool paisley jacket wraps around you like a shawl – cosy, warm and timelessly stylish. Available in various colourways.

3. Violet haze

It’s no accident that Privatsachen is one of our best-loved brands. We stock this relaxed, easy style in a size 2, which is for everyone from UK size 10 to 18 – perfect if you’re buying online and want to be confident your choice will fit.

Best-known for its crinkle silk designs, Privatsachen has kept the same elegant silhouette for this design – but the sumptuous silk velvet turns the glamour up to the max.

4. Raspberry soirée

Another silk velvet indulgence, this gorgeous tunic is designed in the UK by Annabel Drabble and made in India for her brand At Last.

We love the row of delicate pin tucks on the bodice, teamed with raw-edged silk ruffles and delicate mother of pearl buttons to finish the look.

If you’re feeling bolder, choose the bright red – or opt for dark blue for a more understated look.

5. Heather chic

For a more robust, everyday take on texture, this cotton velvet coat from Nomads is a luxe solution – at a very affordable price. The entire collection is designed and made in Cornwall and this season was inspired by a windswept boho vibe.

Whether you prefer the jewel tones of this blue design or the autumnal shades in the rich orange version, it’s certainly a head-turning coat. Just look out for people wanting to stroke your sleeve.
